About Us
What is Sojourner Truth House?
Sojourner Truth House is the ministry of a group of religious women and mentors dedicated to improving life for the people of Gary. The center, a former Catholic rectory, is where the Sisters currently reside.
Each day, the Sisters, mentors and volunteers are challenged in finding new ways and means to offer the women and children of Gary programs and services that will enable them to survive and live more fully, believing in themselves and contributing to their city.
What programs and services does Sojourner Truth House offer?
When Sojourner Truth House opened in 1997, the Sisters came with attentive ears, listening to and learning what the community needed most. From this, they developed programs and services that include:
- Computer Training
- Life Skills
- Parenting Classes
- Clothes Closet
- Advocacy
- Counseling
- Networking with Social Agencies
- Drop-in center for women and children with phones, laundry, shower facilities and a food pantry
- Health Screenings and Referrals
In the future, Sojourner Truth House will be offering:
- Temporary housing for homeless women and children
All of the services are geared towards empowering the women and children of Gary, which in turn will have a ripple effect into the community.
